Alexa ranking information
Alexa
ranking information is a crucial part of monitoring the progress
of your website as you build traffic.
According to Netcraft.com there are over 100 million
active sites on the web.
The figure generated by Alexa gives you your placing
out of all those 100,000,000+ sites.
A site that ranks at 1,000,000 or better is in the top 1% of all
sites.
Alexa.com is the leading traffic-measurement company on the internet.
It's owned by Amazon and measures traffic-popularity based on a
sample of over 10 million users, who are tracked as they surf, providing
the most comprehensive comparative figures.
Here is the Alexa ranking for this website, web-work-at-home.com:
The Alexa system is not infallible and although the
figures above conclude that this website is already a top 1% website-
top 0.5% actually - I tend to think it's ranked a little higher
that it should be presently ... though I'm not complaining!
However, if I compare the traffic with other websites
that I own, it's about right relatively, as this website is doing
the most business and has the highest traffic.
Alexa.com seems to be a bit behind with some information
... it's got my inward bound links wrong and insists on not showing
a screen grab of my front page, but it does allow me to compare
my sites with others.
So, how do you make the most of Alexa ranking information?
Firstly, you need to monitor it as your website progresses, and
as you build content and gather more links, you should see yourself
climbing closer to that top 1% zone.
My personal aspiration is to be top 50,000 ... that
seems to be the level at which you do a reasonable level of business.
To monitor your progress as it builds, you need to
install Firefox as a browser, then install
the Alexa Toolbar, which will give you up-to-date statistics
for how you website - and everybody else's - is performing.
If you haven't got Firefox, install it by clicking
on the icon below:

Finally, when you have statistics which you wish to
boast about, you need to go to webmaster's corner and install a
widget showing off your fantastic Alexa ranking, to build your credibility
and help to market your website.
Make a habit of monitoring this information for yourself
and for your competitors, it becomes addictive.
Use it when judging whether to exchange links with
another website ... is it performing well or is it out in the web
wilderness?
The more you get into the habit of using and analysing
this information, along with all the other tools at your disposal
like Google Adsense reports, Google
Analytics, tracking links and so on, the sooner you'll be able
to turn that information around to pinpoint with great accuracy
your areas of strength and weakness.
