Books for dummies and other resources used on this
website
Books for dummies have played an essential part in the creation
of this website.
I'm a huge fan of the 'For Dummies ...' series of
book as they're not only a great source of practical information,
they don't cost the earth and they're packed full of useful advice
and tips.
I use them - among a selection of websites which I
recommend in my articles - to double-check my facts and for ideas
and writing inspiration.
As you can see from the photo above, there's a large
collection of books for dummies on my desk, to the left hand side
of my laptop, ready to grab when I need them!
My
first books for dummies purchase was Starting
and Running an Online Business for Dummies which I'd borrowed
from the local library.
I found so much useful information in it, it was full
of scraps of paper marking all the bits I wanted to make notes on
later.
I decided it was easier to buy it in the end!
Next came Search
Engine Optimization for Dummies and Web
Marketing for Dummies, both areas which I was keen to learn
more about.
It was through the first book that I first got to
grips with Wordtracker's services and the latter gave me a whole
new crop of ideas for marketing my websites.
Next came Home-Based
Business for Dummies which allows me to double-check information
I'm giving on business legislation before I publish it (and checked
once again on the Business Link website!).
My brother has been a Network Marketer for several
years now and I've talked to him a lot about it and read a lot of
the popular texts on the subject.
Once
again, I ended up with so many bits of paper stuck between the pages
of borrowed books from the library, I decided to invest in a decent
reference source in Network
Marketing for Dummies.
As you can see, I was on a bit of a roll by this stage,
so I added E-mail
Marketing for Dummies and Podcasting
for Dummies to my Amazon Wish List for Christmas, and fortunately
Santa was very generous.
My view is that you never know everything
about a subject, so tips, ideas and hints on email marketing was
a welcome addition to my collection.
As a broadcaster, podcasting has been of interest
to me for some time, and I've been involved in several community
groups now which have produced podcast services.
I was keen to get a more commercial view on the process,
hence the book.
Blogging
is something I've been at for a while now.
It started as an experiment - to set up a blog and
see how it all worked - but I enjoyed it tremendously and have continued
to keep it up.
It's resulted in this website, which is effectively
a blog, though not in conventional blog format, and I continue to
enjoy writing these articles.
So - in for a penny, in for a pound - I added to my
books for dummies collection with Blogging
for Dummies ... I thought I might pick up some new tips and
techniques from this.
Finally, as I've begun to monetize my websites, I've
found Google
AdSense for Dummies to be an extremely useful source of information
and inspiration for writing.
There are still a couple of books for dummies which
I haven't bought yet as I'm pretty familiar with their concepts,
but 'never say never' as the saying goes ... and I do have a birthday
coming up soon!
The useful titles that I haven't yet invested in are:
Starting
a Business on eBay.co.uk For Dummies UK Edition
Skype
for Dummies
AdWords
for Dummies
WordPress
for Dummies
Building
Web Sites All-in-one for Dummies
I'll eventually make a trip to the library once again
and check these books out to see if there's anything in there that
might be useful ... if I can find enough space on my desk!
The other major resource used in the creation of this
website is Site Build It!
I
originally bought Site Build It! as a web creation tool - and a
chance to test a new bit of kit that I hadn't tried before.
As you can see from my collection of folders, it's
become more a way of life than just a simple purchase, and I've
had to move my Site Build It! information onto the shelves behind
my desk because I've run out of room.
Site Build It! has proved to be not only an excellent
website building tool, it's also turned out to be a
great education for me ... and I've been at this business for
over 6 years now!
I constantly use these folders of printed Site
Build It! guides for information and inspiration when writing
features ... one of these folders is never far away!
