Want to create a free website with no ads?

Graphic with web words

When you respond to most appealing adverts which offer to help you create a free website, the hosting usually comes with adverts over which you have no control.

When I first got into building my own sites 4 years ago, I looked for free web hosting packages, like those provided by Netfirms and Bravenet.

Free services are perfectly good and they often come with add-ons like guestbooks, hit counters and 'contact us' pages which I just wouldn't have been able to do myself at that stage in my website building career.

However, it's not long before you get fed up with having someone else's ads on your website and pop-ups in particular drove me mad.

Forced to pay?

So, after your failed hunt to create a free website you start looking for cheap, paid hosting ... and it was then that I moved on to GoDaddy (which I don't like - the interface is too cluttered for my tastes and I didn't find it intuitive) and T35.com which my colleagues at work introduced me to.

I was very happy with T35 until I started building my own websites, and at that stage I needed to move into a multi-domain hosting service, which is when I made the switch to Nativespace.

Now I use Heart Internet as my bandwidth and storage space demands have grown ... they offer unlimited bandwidth, domains and storage space as many other essential add-ons as part of the basic package.

However, a new site has come along which finally gets away from the advert problems associated with free hosting and genuinely allows you to create a free website ... it's called 110mb.com.

Too good to be true?

The blurb says ...

Here's your chance to create and grow your website on one of the most endorsed free website hosting providers online -- that'll never show a single ad on your website!

It really does appear to be that good ... and they go to great lengths to establish their credentials.

The disc space and monthly bandwidth are impressive, you get a site builder too so it's good for starter sites and it would appear to genuinely give you the chance to create a free website ... no ads, no nonsense!

Signing on the dotted line

The signing in process is a little cumbersome, but I can understand exactly why that is ... to deter spammers, phishers and other evil people from using and abusing this 'create a free website' resource.

You have to do an annoying, but frankly quite clever bit where you have to physically write down a phrase from the terms and conditions ... not cut and paste it, but flick backwards and forwards between pages, typing it bit by bit.

If you get a letter or a spelling wrong, or you're unlucky enough to get a website name that someone has got already, you have to go through it all over again.

However once you've finally got through the process, you're off and away.

What do you get for free?

I'm really impressed with this service and wish I'd either known about it four years ago when I started building websites, or before I started paying for a multi-domain package.

However, it's a bit late for me now, though I have decided to park a new idea with this free hosting service to properly put it through its paces.

110mb.com gives you the basic stuff you need to get started and create a free website ... and you can even edit, save and ftp your pages without any kind of software via a delightful WYSIWYG interface.

There are loads of really useful extra bits, most of which you have to pay a very nominal fee for, but as you get more experienced or adventurous, you could start to try some new things out.

None of the add-ons costs more than $9 ... see what I mean about nominal?

There are over 40 webmaster tools at your disposal ... things like page rank prediction tools, broken link checkers and so on.

In fact there are some brilliant tools in there which make it worth the 10 minute sign-up time just to see what they are.

There's an affiliate program, free marketing tools and something that really impressed, over 30 Open Source scripts like Wordpress, Drupal and Zencart ... extremely useful stuff.

Are you getting the impression that I like this yet?

It's an extremely impressive free service, and even if you do have to splash out to use MySQL databses, it's only $9 for goodness sake, and that's to enable full and unlimited support ... which means unlimited databases. Man working on sofa with laptop

And if you don't like it?

So, what can I say? Persevere with the sign-up and login process, and take a good look around 110mb.com if you want to create a free website which doesn't have any catches.

Even if you just use the free tools it's worth the effort, though as part of 'the deal' you do have to maintain some text pages to justify your site space.

Well, 110mb.com even makes that easy ... there's one button to click on labelled "Yep! I want to remove my account' ... click on that and it's all over.
