Wordtracker
Wordtracker
is an essential tool for anybody who's serious about increasing
their web traffic or improving search engine optimization on their
pages.
It's the tool of choice for many SEO professionals
and you should at least be aware of what it can do if you're building
your own website.
Wordtracker takes you the heart of what you should
be trying to achieve on the web.
It answers the question 'What are people searching
for on the web?' and it provides you with numerous tools, devices
and collections of information to make sure that you're not barking
up the wrong tree when you build your online presence.
Wordtracker overview
In their own words, here's what the company says it provides:
* Optimize your website content by using the most popular
keywords for your product and services
* Generate thousands of relevant keywords to improve your organic
and PPC search campaigns
* Research online markets, find niche opportunities and exploit
them before your competitors

Information is compiled from the last 100 days of web searches
- that's hunderds of millions of searches - and stored in databases.
Customers can interrogate these databases to find out what people
are really searching for online - it takes the guesswork out of
the whole process.
You should note that it's a 'paid-for' service, but there are lots
of freebies that you can make good use of, even if you decide not
to subscribe:
- The free
keyword suggestion tool is a 'must' in any webmaster's armoury,
and I make regular use of this even though I do my SEO a different
way (see bottom of page)
- There are some great SEO articles in the 'Academy' section of
the website on themes such as 'Pay Per Click', 'Link Building',
'Social Media Marketing' and much more
- There's a free newsletter sign-up which gives you regular updates
on what's new on the Wordtracker website
- There's a 7 day free trial which also gives you access to 7 days
worth of video guides
- They run an affiliate scheme which has great credibility ...
so even if you're looking for a good affiliate partner - and nothing
more - it's worth a look
Notice the theme there? 'Free' is that lovely word we all like
to hear!
The point I'm making is that a) you really need to be aware of
this service b) even if you decide that Wordtracker is not for you,
there's still plenty of benefits that you can derive from the website
without a subscription.
Even if you do subscribe to the site, I'd still recommend that
you focus your keyword work over no more than a month, then cancel
or suspend your account until you need it next.
You can pay by the day, by the week, by the month or by the year,
so options are extremely flexible, depending on your personal budget
and requirements.
Webmasters building sites for other people will probably find that
they need a rolling subscription, but those building one-off websites
should focus their keyword researching efforts and save their information
in spreadsheets for future reference.
The basic process in Wordtracker is as follows, though the video
guides and information provided by the site will talk you through
this process in detail:
1) Create a Project - you can have up to 7 projects,
useful if you have multiple websites.
2) Keyword universe is like a brainstormer - it
comes up with lots of possibilities for you. This is always your
starting point.
3) Keyword Researcher lets you dig a little deeper.
It's best used once you've got a long list of possible keywords
and want to know which are the most popular.
The Tour
section of the website will guide you through this process step-by-step
with clear and detailed screen grabs.
It gets a bit more complicated with terms like 'Count', 'Predict',
'Dig', '24hrs' and 'KEI' (Keyword Effictiveness Index) but the guides
talk you through it ... regardless of that, prepare for your head
to start spinning with all the number crunching involved.
I can't stress how important this stage is however - get the keywords
right and you'll be building your website on firm foundations.
What are the alternatives to Wordtracker?
Site Build It! Although I make heavy
use of Wordtrackers's free services, I actually use something completely
different for my search engine optimization on this website.
I use a service called Site Build It! which provides
a similar tool to Wordtracker in its all inclusive package.
SEO and keyword research is a particular dislike of
mine, even though I know how absolutely essential it is, so I opted
for a different tool after taking an initial 1 month subscription
of Wordtracker.
Click the image below to find out more if you're looking
for a less labour intensive way of doing your SEO, but be warned
- there is no really simple way, every method requires
sifting, checking, sorting and going back to the drawing board!

Other alternatives that you might like to
try are: keyworddiscovery.com, Yahoo! Search Marketing
and Google Adwords all of which have useful tools and advice to
help you on your SEO journey.
